Opportunity Bank Uganda Celebrates 30 Years of Inclusive Banking and Community Transformation, opens up the 25th branch in Rwamwanja refugee settlement.
The Uganda Green Enterprise Finance Accelerator (UGEFA) and Opportunity Bank Uganda are delighted to announce the expansion of their partnership as UGEFA enters a second phase of the programme. Building on a strong foundation established during the first phase, this renewed collaboration is set to scale the reach and impact of green finance for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) throughout Uganda.
Together, UGEFA and Opportunity Bank will provide innovative financial solutions and tailored business development support to SMEs leading the way in clean energy, sustainable manufacturing, eco-friendly tourism, waste management and green mobility. Supported by the European Union and implemented by adelphi global gGmbH, and together with Opportunity Bank, this partnership empowers businesses that are driving positive environmental and social change across the country.
The official launch event, held at Protea Hotel in Kampala, marks a significant milestone in strengthening Uganda’s green business ecosystem. The event also celebrates the opening of a new call for applications, inviting green enterprises to participate in the UGEFA programme and benefit from expert-led capacity building, business advisory services, and access to finance through Opportunity Bank and other financial partners.
Leadership Perspectives
Amos Bonna, Chief Relations Officer, Opportunity Bank Uganda Limited, stated: “Opportunity Bank Uganda is proud to mark 30 years of service by strengthening our partnership with UGEFA to drive inclusive, climate-resilient growth. Together, we are supporting green enterprises, especially those led by women, youth, and refugees, with sustainable financial solutions grounded in strong ESG principles. As only 11% of Ugandans are aware of green finance and mobile money usage has grown from 23% to 42% in five years, our role in building financial and environmental literacy is more vital than ever. With UGEFA, we remain committed to creating a more equitable and sustainable future for Uganda.”
Cristina Bănuţă, Programme Manager – Access to Finance, Agribusiness and Land at the Delegation of the European Union to Uganda, commented: “The European Union is proud to support the continued collaboration between UGEFA and Opportunity Bank. By empowering green SMEs with access to finance and technical assistance, we are fostering inclusive, sustainable economic development. We are confident this partnership will help accelerate Uganda’s green transition.”
Christine Meyer, Project Lead at UGEFA, said: “We are delighted to continue our journey with Opportunity Bank into UGEFA Phase II. This partnership reflects our shared vision for a thriving green business sector in Uganda. With the new call for applications now open, we invite green entrepreneurs across the country to join us in driving sustainable innovation and impact.”
